Preparing Your Plumbing System for the Winter

The onset of the winter season means that freezing temperatures are arriving too. Freezing temperatures can spell disaster for your plumbing system as the water that runs through it can freeze leading to damaged pipes. So, as winter approaches, it is important to take precautions to prevent damage to your plumbing system. Below we will explore some steps that you can take to winterize your home’s plumbing system:

• Insulate Exposed Pipes: Exposed pipes, especially those in unheated areas such as basements, crawl spaces, or attics, are susceptible to freezing. You should insulate them with foam pipe insulation or heat tape to protect against freezing. Be sure to pay extra attention to pipes near exterior walls.

• Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Hoses: Before winter sets in, drain and disconnect outdoor hoses. Leaving hoses connected can cause water to freeze and expand causing damage to the hose, faucet, and connected pipes.

• Shut Off Exterior Water Sources: Shut off and drain any exterior water sources such as outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems. Be sure to drain out all water from them to prevent them from freezing and potential damage. Consider installing insulating covers for extra protection.

• Seal Gaps and Cracks: Inspect the exterior of your home for any gaps or cracks that could allow cold air to reach your plumbing. Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal these openings, preventing drafts and reducing the risk of frozen pipes.

• Keep Interior Temperatures Consistent: Maintain a consistent temperature inside your home, even when you're away. Set your thermostat to a minimum temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit (12 degrees Celsius) to prevent pipes from freezing. If you plan to be away for an extended period, consider draining your plumbing system or shutting off the main water supply and opening faucets to drain any remaining water.

• Allow Faucets to Drip: Standing water is much easier to freeze. By allowing your faucets to drip, you keep the water flowing which makes it harder to freeze. It also reduces the pressure in the pipes which makes it less likely to freeze.
